What does it really take to become a chef? At NKC Gravesend College, students don't just learn about professional cookery, they get to experience it.
International Chefs Day takes place on 20 October each year, celebrating the culinary profession and the chefs who share their knowledge and inspire the next generation. For 2026, Worldchefs is focusing on its ‘Food Explorers’ campaign, encouraging young people to explore ingredients, discover where food comes from and develop a greater understanding of healthy and sustainable food.
A professional kitchen experience from day one
At NKC Gravesend College, students studying professional cookery develop their skills in industry-standard kitchens and service areas, gaining practical experience alongside their studies.
The College’ Hospitality and Catering area offers Professional Chef and Advanced Professional Chef courses, giving students the opportunity to build their culinary knowledge and practical skills as they progress.
But one of the biggest advantages of studying at NKC Gravesend College is the opportunity to take those skills out of the classroom and into The Gallery Restaurant, a professional-standard restaurant that is open to the public.
For students, it provides a valuable opportunity to experience the pace and expectations of a real working hospitality environment. Trainee chefs prepare food under the supervision of qualified chef tutors, while hospitality students gain experience in front-of-house service.
That means students aren't simply practising dishes for an assessment. They are preparing food for real customers.
They learn how important timing and organisation are, how to work effectively as part of a kitchen team and how to maintain standards throughout a service. They also get to see how the kitchen and front-of-house teams work together to create the experience a customer receives.
It's an opportunity to put their training into practice while building the confidence that comes from knowing they can perform in a professional environment.
Gaining this experience can make a real difference when students take their next step into the industry and their future careers.
A career full of possibilities
For anyone who loves food, a career in catering can open the door to a huge range of opportunities.
There are restaurants, hotels, events, contract catering and many other areas of hospitality to explore. With experience, chefs can specialise in different areas of the industry, develop their own style and progress into more senior kitchen roles.
And the journey starts with learning the fundamentals, getting plenty of practical experience and being willing to keep learning.
This International Chefs Day, we're celebrating the chefs who inspire us and the future chefs who are just getting started.
